The resemblance with celebrity lizard godzilla has been brought up in many occasions. Just recently an underwater video reveals an incredible resemblance, but no, the Galapagos marine iguana does not blow fire and is neither a super hero or a villain. This does not stop it from being a celebrity, the below video has become amazingly viral on youtube:
The pre-historic looking lizards of the archipelago in spite of their monster-like appearance are among the tamest creatures you will encounter. When Charles Darwin first encountered the Marine Iguana it must have been a scary sight, he did not yet know it was vegetarian, this did not stop him form cataloging it as “the most sluggish, disgusting, clumsy lizards”, adding “horrendous sooty colour” and “hideous heads” he finally came up with a nickname: “the imps of darkness”.
This misunderstood lizard is unique to the Galapagos archipelago, the only sea-going lizard on the planet. When it comes to feeding it can dive up to 25 meters/82 feet in search of algae. Being a reptile it can only immerse itself in the cooler waters of the archipelago for a short time and it must return to dry land and warm up under the equatorial sun. What amazes me the most is its unique digestive system, it cooks/digests its food within its stomach as it lies under the sun. Finally it spits out the excessive salt from its meal.
There are several subspecies and they vary in size and color, depending on the nutrients found in the algae of the Island they inhabit.
The marine iguana can be found all over the archipelago, it should not be difficult to spot a few ohe marine iguana can be found all over the archipelago, it should not be difficult to spot a few n any cruise itinerary.
